cars and more school buses on the roads this morning. fox5's alyssa deitsch joins us live from a ccsd bus yard in north las vegas to tell us how the school district makes sure more than a hundred thousand students get to school. yeah... can you believe these buses transport 120-thousand students every single day?! and on time?? i should have taken the bus... i remember by the time i got to high school my first period teacher would announce me as a new stuident every day i made it on time. but look at all these buses ready to head out all over the valley... this is the cheyenne bus yard in north las vegas. and in just a few hours-- all these buses will be out on the roads with you... so prepare yourself for a longer commute...

it comes to school buses. if you see one with red lights flashing and the stop sign is out ... you must stop no matter which direction you're going on a two- lane roadway. or if you are on a multiple lane roadway going the same way as the bus. the only time you don't have to stop is if there's a median on the road and you're going the opposite direction as the bus. . and guys we're here pretty early so, in about a half hour we'll have the superintendent and the trnp operations manager here making sure everyhting is running smoothly so we'll try and talk to them about the upcoming school year... and this giant task of getting everyone where theyre supposed to be. while it may be the first day of school for the kids.. for parents-- its freedom.

and if you're running around this morning. don't forget your can still get your news on the go. by downloading our fox 5' app. and watching our show anytime were on air. a local autism foundation worked all weekend long.. replacing hundreds of school supplies destroyed in a warehouse fire. the people's autism foundation held two supply drives. their goal was to fill up an entire trailer with supplies for local special needs students.. and while the drive is over.. if you still want to donate.. they're taking monetary donations online.. you can find a link on our website. the salvation army made sure local students are ready for class. and its all thanks to our community fox five's "take five to care" partnered with the salvation army for the s-o-s drive. donations came in all summer long. volunteers collected pencils... notebooks... and crayons to stuff into backpacks.. and those backpacks have finally made their way into the hands of some lucky

"we're still counting all the numbers but in the course of the week since the fox5 take care to five event we've been able to assemble over 1,000 backpacks and we've been able to put them together and giving them out through the course of the week, today we're giving out another 500 out to kids that are coming out here. the extra supplies from the drive will be donated to the clark county school district. the clark county school district. the nevada youth network will be holding a special event for the students at matt kelly elementary school. you're looking at a former back-to- school event from the group.. more than 100 men.. including state senators.. judges.. and policemen.. will be at the school this morning to show the students support... and to serve as positive role models. our own john huck showed his support for students last night.. strutting his stuff at the "corner for success" charity foundation awards gala. the event benefits programs for girls ages 9 to 14. the night's events include a fashion show. john was joined

wilhelm elementary school in north las vegas. the speed limit in a school zone is either -- 15 miles per hour or 25 miles per hour -- it does vary depending on your location. and while some zones are enforced only when children are present -- others are enforced wh session for day. first... u-turns are not allowed in school zones. a lot of parents like to do this after dropping their child off at the curb. but it's illegal and increases the chance for a crash. also... no passing in school zones. if you see a car driving slow... you cannot pass it. that's because the car might be slowing down for a child that you don't see.

playing sports in high school is fun. but a new study shows more students are reporting concussions than ever before. but this may not mean more students are being injured. resear there is just more education on concussions. so students are telling their coaches more often. if the injuries aren't dealt with in a timely manner. they can severely damage the brain so more kids are speaking up saving themselves from future complications. between books.. laptops.. and lunch. those backpacks can get very heavy very fast. doctors say having all that weight on a kids' back can cause poor posture. spinal stress. and persistent

training. they also have to do 10 hours of training before each school year. and in just a few hours-- all these buses will be out on the roads with you... so prepare yourself for a longer commute... because there are more rules when it comes to school buses. if you see one with red lights flashing and the stop sign is out ... you must stop no matter which direction you're its not just c-c- s-d schools heading back. students at unlv will be hitting the books too! and campus will be crowded. for the fifth straight year in a row.. unlv is welcoming its largest class ever. about 4-thousand freshman are heading onto campus.. packing the residence halls to capacity. the class of graduate students is growing as well. with enrollment up about 4- percent. while many of the new students will be living on campus.. about 90-percent of students are commuters. which will cause a lot of traffic headaches today. unlv is working towards a solution.. building a brand new garage across from the in-n-out on maryland parkway. but students this

early. because the new garage won't be ready until may 20-17. if you're planning on parking on campus.. make sure you buy your parking pass. semester and yearly passes are now available online.. with prices for motorcycles starting at just 36-dollars for a fall pass.. and 56-dollars for cars. thousands of freshman are starting college life at unlv this morning... it took maria and i 7 years each to graduate. here are some tips... instead of loading up on difficult classes.. ease into it... i took history of rock-n-roll... got a b... also go to the library. there are so many helpful people and resources to help your pass. and before you hand in papers.. get them checked by the writing center. and.. don't party too much. its great to have fun.. but you need a balance.
